Großkirchheim is located in the north part of the Austrian province Carinthia which is known for its beautiful scenery with magnificent lakes, elongated massifs and historical sites. Großkirchheim lies in the National Park Hohe Tauern. This is the largest protected area of the Alps around the highest mountain of Austria, the Grossglockner (3,798 m).

The Grossglockner High Alpine Road starts at about 10 km from Feriendorf Döllach. This beautiful pass (closed during winter) from 48 km through the mountains of the Grossglockner offers a connection north towards Zell am See, Salzburg and access to the Franz-Josef-Hohe and adjacent Pasterze (longest gletser of Carinthia). From here, in the heart of the national park, you have beautiful views over the mountains, because in a radius of 30 km there are about 40 mountains with an altitude over 3000 meters!
